Daniel McIlroy, his wife Mary Scally and their family
« on: Tuesday 06 December 16 02:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, I have been doing research on my great grandmother Ellen Dillon (nee McIlroy) and have come stuck. Her father was Daniel McIlroy from Cushendall in Northern Ireland and her mother was Mary Scally from Dunacalter in Northern Ireland. I do not know when they were born or married.

I found out they had children:
John McIroy
Elizabeth McIlroy
Bridget McIlroy
Charles McIlroy
Agnes Mary McIlroy
Mary Ann McIlroy (died 29 October, 1950 in New Zealand)
Ellen Dillon - nee McIlroy (born approx 1859 - died 29 Janurary, 1941 in New Zealand)

There are possibly other siblings I don't know of.

Any help and information anybody can provide would be terrific.

All the best for the Christmas Season,

Ashley

Hello Ashley
Where did you find the information about Daniel McIlroy and Mary Scully being the parents of Ellen born c1858 and Mary born c1860?
I have been looking on familysearch.org and I can see the baptism records for the other children you list but the earliest of them is 1868 and I can't see Ellen or Mary's baptism records with these parents.
John McIroy 1870 Antrim
Elizabeth McIlroy 1876 Antrim
Bridget McIlroy 1868 Antrim
Charles McIlroy 1871 Antrim
Agnes Mary McIlroy 1874 Antrim

I'll take another look.

Daniel Mcilroy
 Event Type     Marriage
 Event Date     1847
 Event Place     Coleraine, Ireland
 Vol  4  page 115

No bride given on this record

That marriage was on 3.6.1847 and was to Mary Moore. If Daniel & Ellen were RC, and married pre 1.1.1864, then their marriage won’t be in the Irish civil indexes. You might find it in the parish records though. The RC records for Loughguile show them as having married in that parish on 15.8.1857.

The bride’s place of birth may be Dunmakelter which is in Culfeightrin parish. There was a Pat Scully (a variation of Scally), farming in the townland in 1831 according to the tithe applotment records:

http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/antrim/tithe-applotments/culfeightrin-parish.php#.WEZPgxR2ug0

here’s a link to the birth of Charles McIlroy on 29.12.1871 which shows that the family were farming in Magherahoney. See:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1872/03264/2196368.pdf

Family in 1901:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Ballyhoe/Magherahoney/943960/

There were 2 other McIlroy/McElroy households in the townland who are probably relations.

From the PRONI wills site:

Probate of the Will of Daniel M'Ilroy late of Magherahoney County Antrim Farmer who died 31 July 1903 granted at Belfast to Mary M'Ilroy the Widow

Daniel’s will can be read on-line on the PRONI site. He had 2 farms in Magherahoney and left both to his wife Mary.

https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/search-will-calendars

Mary’s probate abstract:

McIlroy Mary of Magherahoney county Antrim widow died 7 November 1921 Probate Belfast 19 January to John McIlroy farmer. Effects £54 5s.

Her will is not on-line yet but should be held in PRONI in paper format.

1911 census:

Those are birth extracts not baptisms. Civil registration of births started in 1864.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

... Ellen Dillon - nee McIlroy (born approx 1859 - died 29 Janurary, 1941 in New Zealand) ...

From the Loughguile RC parish registers, an Ellen McIlroy was baptised on 27 June 1858, parents Daniel & Mary, sponsors Gabriel Kinney and Anne? McIlroy (right page, 15th line up from bottom):

I found one other possible daughter for Daniel McIlroy and Mary Scally: Jane McIlroy born 8 January, 1863. Though I only saw the mother was Mary - so I'm not sure.

Elwyn Soutter when you say "If Daniel & Ellen" are you referring to Daniel and Mary?

Yes. My mistake.
