Lavillia Jane and David Williams
« on: Thursday 08 December 16 01:04 GMT (UK) »
Good Afternoon.

Lavillia Jane Parker/Poyner was my GG Grandmother, she married a David Williams on Oct 8, 1877 in Wallsend, Newcastle. NSW. Australia.
They had two children
David Albert Williams who died at birth or shortly thereafter.
James Henry Williams. Born in 1880.

There seems to be no trace of David after this.  He was Lavillia's second husband.

There is no mention of him on her funeral notices, and the only mention is she is buried under the name of Lavillia Jane Williams.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I am not even sure anymore of Davids birthdate or where he was born.  This is a huge mystery.

Regards Suzanne

You need to see the marriage certificate, 1877.
It will ask for age, birthplace, occupation, marital status, residence of David WILLIAMS, and Lavillia HILL. Witnesses names might relate to his family. With more information about David, you might be able to locate him later in life.

The marriage certificate for son James Henry WILLIAMS will record name of father, and possibly indicate (dec).

Can't find David Williams death straight away, but just to make sure: Lavillia Jane HILL m David WILLIAMS in 1877 (which fits with the funeral notice of sons Thomas, John and Joseph HILL)
and Lavina Jane JONES m Henry Alfred HILL 1870 in Sydney (927/1870). So not sure where the name Parker/Poyner fits in? or am I completely on the wrong track?

Lavillia married Joseph Hill before she married David Williams. Parker/Poyner was her maiden name.

Hi there,

Welcome to RootsChat.

I will ask one of the volunteer moderators to move your thread to the Australia Board, as it will catch the eyes of the regulars there.

Birth registered in 1878 in the Wallsend District, NSW for David Albert, son of David and Lavila Jane WILLIAMS.  #18857
The online index now has a great feature, you can deduce the date of the event being registered.  So David Albert’s birth was 25 July 1878.

I will look up some of my offline resources to see if I have more info to add.

Hi there,

From the 1875 Grevilles PO Directory for WALLSEND

David WILLIAMS, Miner
D G WILLIAMS, storekeeper
Isaac PARKER, Miner
Samson PARKER, Blacksmith at Platsburg

From the 1878    NSW Electoral Roll for NORTHUMBERLAND (includes Wallsend)
There are NINE chaps listed under David WILLIAMS….

From memory, WILLIAMS is one of the top five surnames in 19th Century NSW.

ADD
NSW 1870 ER, NORTHUMBERLAND,  six listed as David WILLIAMS

Thank you so much.
There eldest son David was either stillborn and died shortly thereafter birth
They had another son James Henry Williams.

Most of my resources are packed away after moving and I can't locate a lot of them unfortunately.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

That's half the trouble, I have come across a few David Williams. I'm not sure which one is him.
I a, now not even sure where he was born.
When.
Or anything else.

I can't work out why he isn't mentioned on Lavillias headstone.
Or why neither of them are mentioned in each other's funeral notices.

There is a story here somewhere.

Yes,  I understand  :)  I mentioned the popularity of the surname for others reading the thread  :)

I will continue looking  :)  Joseph HILL, Platsburg could well be neighbour to his daughter and her family, so I will concentrate on the David WILLIAMS, miner, just in case  :)
