Request for information re George Chapman Clerk and Curate of Kelloe Church
« on: Thursday 08 December 16 10:02 GMT (UK) »

My 5 x Great grandfather George Chapman was a Clerk and Curate for about 6 years at St Helen`s Church Kelloe from 1782-1788 when he died. I know that he was buried in Kelloe but I dont know where he was born or how old he was when he died.

In 1779 he married Sarah Colman my 5 x great grandmother. Sarah was born in Kelloe in 1756 the daughter of Robert Colman and Hannah Arrowsmith. They had 4 children Robert born 1782, Sarah born 1785, John and Hannah born 1786. They were all born in Kelloe. In 1786 his wife Sarah died. Then in 1788 George Chapman died. I dont know what happened with all the children as they would have been very young when they lost both parents.

Sarah Chapman born 1785 was my 4x great grandmother. On 10th October 1802 she was married at St Helens church Kelloe to Edward Bellerby. She was pregnant with my 3x great grandfather Robert who was born on 12 december 1802. Robert was baptised in Trimdon.

Sadly Sarah died in 1806 at the age of 21 years. She was burried also in Kelloe. I wondered if anyone had any more information regarding George Chapman or any of Sarah Bellerby nee Chapman`s siblings

Hi,

According to the marriage bond, April 7th 1779, both George & Sarah were 21 and upwards.

Perhaps there is a memorial in the church which would give his age? A transcript of Kelloe St Helen MIs is available from Cleveland FHS

There was another child called George according to this book of 1793 about a charity for clergymen's orphans

Thank you very much for that info Fiddlerslass. You`re a star :) I missed George Chapman Junior so that is an extra family member.

The whole family on the Chapman and Colman side seem to have died young. The only death I found in Kelloe for Robert Colman was 1752 but this cant be him. I wondered if maybe they had a son died in infancy.

There dosen`t seem to be a mention in Robert`s will for Robert Junior but he seemed to have left his wife and daughters well provided for
