Whos the mummy?
« on: Thursday 08 December 16 10:14 GMT (UK) »
Martha Gates b. 1846 in Bethnal Green (who married Edward Charles Coster in 1867) is listed in the 1851 and 1861 census as the daughter of Thomas and Ann Gates.

Thomas Gates b. 1821 in Bethnal Green was listed as a Bedstead Maker in 1851 and 1861. (Following him and his children it looks as if he changed his occupation later on)

Their first born (according to 1861 census) was Thomas H Gates b. 1843 in Mile End - searching birth records the only one matching was Thomas Humpries Gates - so i guessed Humphries was her maiden name and found a marriage in Bethnal Green 1850 of a Thomas Gates and Ann Humphreys BUT on Thomas Humpries Gates baptism record it says his mother is Martha?? There is a marriage for a Martha Humpries and Thomas Gates in 1843 where Thomas is listed as a Silk Weaver...

I think ive been over thinking this for the last 24 hours and have now just confused myself! Lol

Can i get anyone's opinions on this?

Thank you :)  :)

First - stop guessing! ;D
One of my ancestors has a middle name of Whitmore - it's his grandmother's maiden name! :-\

Have you checked mother's maiden name of the new GRO Index Search?
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

MMN is now included on search results for births from 1837!

This looks like the marriage

Marriages Jun 1842
GATES    Thomas
HUMPHREYS    Martha
Shoreditch    2   342

As to her being Ann on the census - you need to check that Martha Humphreys didn't die before 1851 and that Thomas didn't remarry to an Ann. Or it could be simply that although her proper name was Martha that she was known as Ann.

There is this death, she was 27.

Deaths Sep 1849
Gates    Martha
Bethnal Green    2   113

Interesting that as you say, there is a Thomas Gates possibly marrying an Ann Humphreys in 1850 in Bethnel Green. I wonder if he re-married to Martha's sister, not uncommon when there were young children involved. You may have to send for death and marriage certificates to make sure.

So Thomas's father has the same occupation as on the certificate of Thomas and Martha's marriage. On that, Martha's father, Thomas, is a plasterer, so I would say that it is quite a good possibility that Martha and Ann may have been sisters.
