1861 census at 70 Portnockie

Christina Lyall 51 b Banff
William Lyall 20 b Rathven (Portnockie)
Ann Lyall 18 b Rathven (Portnockie)

1871 at 70 Portnockie

Christina Lyall  60 b Banff
Ann Lyall 26 b Portnockie
Christina Lyall granddaughter 0 b Portnockie
(plus 2 lodgers)

1881 at 95 Portnockie

Christina Lyall 78 b Banff
Ann Lyall 39 b Banff
Christina Rennie 10 b Portnockie
William Lyall 8 grandson b Portnockie

Age is a bit inconsistent but think this is her. Place of birth is mostly given as Banff - I cannot see a birth in Banff for her and so the death cert I quoted earlier is your best bet for locating the information you are after.

William

The fuller story in 1861 from FreeCEN is
70 Portknockie, Seafield
Christina Lyall, widow, 51, born Banffshire, Banff
William Lyall, son, 20, cooper Journeyman, born Banffshire, Rathven (Originally: Banffshire, Portknockie)
Ann Lyall, daughter, 18, born Banffshire, Rathven (Originally: Banffshire, Portknockie)

It looks as if the enumerator has recorded the place of birth as Portknockie, and someone, later or, has corrected it to Rathven. Whether this was the census supervisor or the FreeCEN transcriber I cannot say without looking at the original document on Scotland's People.

Portknockie was affected by an unusually large number of boundary changes in the 19th century, resulting in it being in Cullen, Rathven and Seafield at different times! See http://www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/Cullen/CullenQS.html for details of the shifting boundaries.

Have you checked that death certificate yet to get the names of her parents?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you everyone again. I have now checked the death cert. and it all adds up. She died on 11th July 1881 at 95 Portnockie, Seafield , Rathven. Widow of William Lyall, fishcurer and grocer. Her father was Gordon Rainey, a Ship's carpenter and her mother was Ann Rainy m/s Donaldson. The ages given on the census were very confusing... Christina Rennie was my second great grandmother.

So that must be her mother with her in 1841, aged given as 70.

Garden Rainy and Ann Donaldson had a son John, born 21 and baptized 26 October 1793 in Banff, but SP apparently doesn't list the baptism of Christian.

The marriage of Garden Rannie and Ann Donaldson gives his abode as Banff, his occupation being sailor ( a mate on the Union of Banff ) while her abode is given as Portknockie, parish of Cullen.

(There is a birth for an Ann Donaldson in Cullen 30 March 1769 Parents Alexander Donaldson and Margaret Smith -Alexander is a shoemaker.)
