Joseph Langs Land
« on: Saturday 10 December 16 22:52 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking at an 1861 census which possibly belongs to an my ancestor Daniel Docherty. Born in Renfrewshire, his address is given as "Joseph Langs Land". Does anyone have any more info on this place? Any ideas?

If it turns out to be my ancestor Daniel, his son marries into the Laing family, not sure if that's just a coincidence or whether it could be relevant.

Looking at the address on FindMyPast there are other families also living at Joseph Langs Land which is listed as within the hamlet of Crosslee.  The hamlet is shown on this 1863 map  http://maps.nls.uk/view/74428235#zoom=4&lat=2627&lon=11069&layers=BT

Edit - In 1851 there was a Joseph Lang b 1804 Houston Renfrewshire living at Goldenlea Houston - listed as a Farr of 23 Acres & Coal Master and in 1871 living at Crosslee Cottage, Houston - listed as a Retired Overseer.   I wonder if the land might be his and in 1871 he might be living at the property marked as Crosslee in the village on the 1863 map?? :-\

Daniel was a tenant on the in the west side of the house owned by Joseph Lang of Crosslee as did Patrick Murray.  Andrew Muir, John Murray and James Dunbar occupied the east side of the house.
