So the family does appear to have treated their births differently...

Did Joseph ever need a birth certificate in Canada for anything? I wonder what he produced if he did?

Could this be Harris? Will look for them in census now

I don't think Joseph needed a birth certificate, only that both the census and the marriage all give Joseph as the father.

Perhaps Joseph and Elizabeth are the parents, but it was a very late, unexpected birth

Hmm, seems like this mystery might not be easily solvable, if at all.

Illegitimate children have been known to bring up some of the most difficult brick walls to break

There was a Harris GILL (aged 3, Wigton) in 1901 whom I can't see in 1911.

In 1901 his mother was Margaret (29).  Perhaps she was the Margaret Ann who died in 1903 (30).

Perhaps Harris was somehow "adopted".
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.
