A bottle I think means a bundle, whether it was a specific measure I am not sure but it may have been.

The amount he stole was worth 6d in 1878. A bottle of rum sounds more feasible, doesn't it?

Possible, although stroh rum is Austrian. Good in coffee but a bit strong to drink neat.

Yes ahaha! The plot is thickening. Aparantely Picasso did a painting of it once. ;)
