St Ninian's wheelwrights
« on: Thursday 15 December 16 09:46 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor Robert Robertson McALLISTER, born 1840 in St.Ninian's, Stirlingshire, moved to Liverpool some time before 1865 in his capacity as a wheelwright/coachmaker. His brother Andrew made the same switch at the same time. Does anybody have any idea as to why the trade of wheelwright was associated with St.Ninian's (they may also have moved to Dalkeith in between), and why such tradesmen might have left the area in search of work in Liverpool at that time?

Carl, most towns had a wheelwright, horses & carts!  Whether there was a coachbuilder there or in Dalkeith is another matter? A coachbuilder needed wheels, worth trying!

Just a thought...

Would a Wheelwright work on Mill & Brewery Machinery too?

A millwright Annie originally built & repaired mills, still extant but not fixing mills.   A wheelwright basically made & repaired wheels, all the different components being bound by the steel hoop,  very skilled work.  A  large coachbuilders would probably have had its own wheel shop & employed several wheelwrights. Dingwall for example, although a small town, had a large coachbuilding company,  forget the name. Did Dalkeith also?

You would think Edinburgh had better opportunities, maybe a friend or relative lived in Dalkeith?

There was a blacksmiths shop owned by Armstrong's in St Ninians in the 19th century, a possible place of employment for your McAlister ancestor, one of this family Robert Armstrong married an Elizabeth McAlister, St Ninians, in 1820,

"Tom Paterson's Genealogy," has a list of McAlister's, some from St Ninians, on his website,
