Wills - help
« on: Thursday 15 December 16 17:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi there everyone,
I found a will in Proni, record date April 1875 for a Arthur McGuigan, Newry, will states he died on 22nd January 1875. I need to find the death record but so far I can't seem to find it. I have tried a few combinations on proni but to no avail. What am I doing wrong? I thought all deaths were registered after 1864.
Thankyou

Ros Davies site:
"Arthur   McGUIGAN   .   Newry   husband of Maria; father of James; burying plot c. 1900 in St. Mary's Catholic graveyard   MIs"

Wondering if him being Catholic has any bearing on finding his death registration?

"Although civil registration of births, marriages and deaths began in 1864, records were not accurately kept for a number of years, so a cut-off date of 1880 was applied for the microfilming of registers." http://registers.nli.ie/about

Thanks a million I didn't know that about the proni records.  I have a possibilty that this Arthur could be an ancestor, I have a Maria McGuigan on proni wills which I know is definitely connected to my ancester line but confused on which Arthur it is, there were quite a few and it is going back so far now. I was hoping for the death cert so I could rule this Arthur out. Children's names on will are the same but my Arthur was a farmer in 1837 not a gentleman as will states unless circumstances changed. A lot of coincedences in that will are the same but could be a red herring. :)

I think you are getting PRONI & GRONI mixed up. GRONI (General Registry Office of N.I.) have the vital records- births, marriages and deaths. Registration became compulsory in 1870.
PRONI (Public Records Office of N.I.) is a record repository and has Wills, etc.

The Will of Arthur M'Guigan late of Pound-row Newry County Armagh Gentleman deceased who died 22 January 1875 at same place was proved at Armagh by the oaths of Edward Byrne and Michael Byrne both of Newry Merchants the Executors. Proved in April 1875 so date of death should be fairly accurate.

Have you tried searching local papers for a death notice?

Thankyou aghadowey,
I actually do not know the difference between Groni and proni, I am researching online as not based in Ireland so I presumed that Groni was the online site. I found the will for Arthur McGuigan but tried to find a death corresponding with his death date on groni but nothing matches! His death was 1875 but no sign fo anything.  Thanks again and Happy new year.

Hi, the newspapers are definitely the next step in my research but I need to go to Newry, I did have a family member do a bit of research in Newry library that was very valuable to my research but can not expect them to keep going on my behalf. Anyway it is something I would like to do myself when I get some time. The Arthur I am looking for was born around 1815, he was father to my ggf Patrick McGuigan, he was a labourer and a clerk born 1837, the interest in the will was that the names including Arthur, Stephen, Peter, Thomas etc on will and the street area of Monaghan row the same as my family line of Mcguigan, also his wife being a Maria. Also on proni Wills a Maria  Mcguigan also had a will which is definitely my line but perhaps no connection to this Arthur. When you actually look at the name Arthur Mcguigan there are actually quite a few! Thanks again for your valuable information.

Before going to Newry it would be best to see what newspapers they actually do have on site. It might be that the ones you need are at the Newspaper Library next to Central Library in Belfast.
