Farrells - I'm descended from Jeremiah FARRELL, through his son Hugh, who was born in 1855. Jeremiah also had a son called Thomas, who was born in 1835. I haven't followed Thomas's line.

Hi Keyboard86,

Can you please tell me where you found the ship's passenger lists that mention David & Betsy Robertson sailing to SA ? I had a look on Ancestry but couldn't find them.

It does sound like they also went out to join family over there.

Where's the best place to find births & marriages in SA, as I'm new to finding info regarding SA.

Thanks again.

Ah, I see. My Farrell's came over from Ireland, it's where they're from I'm trying to find out.

Thanks for the info regarding Betsy Robertson in the SA archives index, hopefully I'll find more about her.

Jeremiah was from Ireland, but moved to Scotland some time before his marriage to Anne MUIR in 1829.

I've found South African births and marriages on Family Search, but only a limited number are indexed there. To find deaths and probates, follow the instructions in this article:

If you can find a birth in Scotland, in 1855, for the family you are searching for, the register records where the mother and father were born. This is recorded only in that one year. The 1881 census may also record the county of origin, in Ireland.

Unfortunately for me, Jeremiah's place of origin is unreadable, and he died in 1880.

Hi Johnf04,

Thanks for the info regarding Betsy Robertson, the record on the NASA site mentions 'PRSP' do you know what that means by any chance ? and a date of death 5th Jan 1918 is that for David ? and 1955 for Betsy in Natal ? I had a look for David's death notice in 1918 but couldn't see it.

If you'd like to upload your doc for Jeremiah I could have a go at deciphering where Jeremiah came from if you like ? I'm not bad at reading old documents a I used to do calligraphy.

PRSP means something like "predeceased spouse", and yes, the date is for David. I couldn't see a death notice, either. 1955 for Betsy.

Here is a link to my previous thread on here, about Jeremiah's place of origin - it has a copy of part of the certificate:

PRSP usually means "Previous Spouse".

Did David die in South Africa?  There is an extradition file on the archives for a David Roberston dated 1911 where he will be returned to Scotland.
