The actual register says baseborn child of Elizabeth of Stinchcomb.

I'm working my way back from Sarah's daughter Elizabeth who was known as Bessie.  She married and died in New Zealand.  Her husband was also from the Forest of Dean so may have known her family.  It says she was from Gloucestershire and that her parents were Sarah Prout and Richard James, so I'm confident that I've found her parents.  In terms of accuracy this death printout is excellent. 

Initially I thought James Prout and Hannah Phillips were Sarah's parents but I've had one of those "back up the truck....what makes you so sure?" moments. 

There's no clues from the witnesses at the wedding.  Members of the Drew family were often witnesses at marriages at St Johns, Cinderford.

Thank you everyone for looking at this.  I'm feeling more reassured that Sarah is the daughter of James Prout and Hannah Phillips by the 1881 census at Lea Bailey.

James and Hannah had a daughter Harriet whose second marriage was to Joseph Virgo. (I haven't found the marriage yet).  She is described as a visitor on the census.

Harriet's third marriage was at All Saints, Viney Hill on 25 Feb 1884 to Richard Embling, and she says her father was James Prout, sawyer.
