Wigston workhouse
« on: Saturday 17 December 16 22:47 GMT (UK) »
From my research I believe that Wigston Magna (Great Wigston) had a workhouse but can find no reference to its whereabouts. I know it was demolished and I think that Wigston people went to the Union Workhouse in the newly built one at Enderby. Any information, dates etc on this topic would be appreciated.
Many thanks.   Thornwood.

Two possibilities for you to try:

www.wigstonhistoricalsociety.co.uk/

Or the Leicestershire Records Office is located in Wigston.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

Thanks MaxD. I think this site was where I originally found that Wigston had a workhouse in the 1700s. It seems that it was probably in rented premises and could have moved several times. I will contact the local history group but I don't suppose it will be on old maps if it was in private premises owned by people paid to look after the poor.
