Looking for birthdate of Dorothy Alice Carter

I was going to suggest that you see what Dorothy said her birth date was in the 1939 Register. Not as reliable as a birth certificate. Available online, but we cannot do look ups.
However you already have that info, age was one year out. Someone did a look up perhaps!

Unfortunately as the others have said, the only way to get most birth certificates is to buy them from the GRO, very few are on line.

Nope, this is all new to me.  I now realise what that it is a GRO reference, but with Josephs Certificate I just put in a name and year and got lucky.

I might aswell give this one last punt, although I'm pretty much finished now.  I've ordered the marriage certificate between John Carter and Annie Maria Paul, and also the birth certificate for John Carter, but I cannot find the GRO reference for Annie Maria Paul to get her birthdate.  Checked Free BMD and GRO.  If anyone can help me out would be very grateful.

Very odd, from the Dorset Church of England Marriages, her father is given as William Paul and her date of birth about 1857. However, I can't find the family on the 1861 or 1871 census and I can't see a birth registration either.

Odd again! (Using the GRO site)

Ruth Paul born 1860 Blandford mother's maiden name JARVIS

But no Annie Maria or Anna Maria with mother's maiden name Jarvis. The only one is this, no mother's maiden name given and the date doesn't fit with age in census or on marriage.

This family seem to have a habit of registering the children with one name and baptising them with another! Ruth Paul was baptised as Dorcas Ruth Paul on 13 May 1860 at Tarrant-Monckton.

William George Paul and Sydney John Paul both have mother's maiden name as Jarvis. So I think it's safe to say that it was also Ann/Anna/Annie's mother's name as well. Just a nuisance that for some reason she either wasn't registered or it is missing. According to both censuses it should be about 1858.

She was privately baptised, which often meant it was done quickly, sometimes at home as the child wasn't expected to live. Perhaps if she was ill, they just forgot to actually register her, thinking that the baptism was enough.
