Have you found them in any Scottish census

Could James have died between the birth of the youngest and 1855
Or in Ireland and his wife and children moved to Scotland

A possibility yes but the marriage of his daughter says he was late of Partick. One of his other children's marriage certificates in Scotland from 1864 says his father was deceased.

Finding them in the census has been difficult. I can't find them in the 1851 or 1861 census. They are in the 1871 census.

So he could still have died prior to 1855 Which then would mean you need to look at burial records and MI if they could afford a headstone
