Ice Cream Shop in Greenock
« on: Tuesday 20 December 16 11:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I am searching for some of my ancestors who at one stage lived and apparently operated an Ice Cream Shop in Greenock.

Dominick Bonino was an Italian who lived in Glasgow & Greenock, I have him listed on the 1881 census as living in Market Street & 1885 Valuation Rolls living in Cathcart Street. On his wife's application for relief he is listed as having one in Cartsdyke Street (not sure if this exists) - see attached image.

I've always struggled finding information of them, as the surname changes alot (Bannon, Bonina, Bonnino, Bonham, Bonnayn) and they seem to move around alot. Any information would be great!
Scollay - Shetland (Sjovald line)
Odie - Shetland
Bannon - Belfast
Donaghy - Belfast/Derry
Rooney - Belfast
McManus- Belfast

Cartsdyke exists (or existed), though I can't find a street by that name:

Is there anything specific you are looking for? You have the 1881 census - do you have them on any other censuses? Did they marry in Scotland?

Just information on where they lived etc, or any details about them? Or any records of the shop

They married in Dublin, but I think she had left them by them.

Hi escollay,

Out of interest, what was Dominick's actual occupation titled as on 1881 please?

Do you have the family on any other census'?

Can you please provide as much info. as possible?

When born/married/wife's name/children's names/births & where etc. to help locate them?

They married in Dublin, but I think she had left them by them.

Who had left who?
What year did they marry?
When did they come to Scotland (ie what is your first record of them in Scotland)?
If they died in Scotland their death certificates should name both parents if known by the informant. That would take you back a generation ....  :-\

Specifically, if you can tell us things like years of birth, places of birth, names of children and their dates and places of birth, then it might give us something more to search for.

As you say the surname varies, so knowing other details about them might help locate them.

In fact, you have forgotten to tell us the wife's name ....

Added: I can't find a Dom* Bon* b Italy on the 1881 Scottish census ...
