Not sure how long the site has been around - not that long I suspect, but http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/list/Cheshire.shtml contains a list of Children's Homes, etc., compiled by Peter Higginbotham of Workhouses fame.

The Nantwich Workhouse is a definite possibility.  I have an unmarried mother on my tree who turned up in the Northwich Workhouse.  Try http://www.geocities.ws/fountalnpen/index-2.html  not sure how well this site works now, worth a try.
