Help needed identifying ships sailed by a master mariner
« on: Wednesday 21 December 16 18:17 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor was a master mariner in the 1850s and one of his certificates of service shows that he worked his way up from an apprentice at the age of 16 to a master (ie a captain) at the age of 35 in 1851. The back of the document shows a list of the various ships he worked on. I would like to find out more about them but I've having trouble identifying the right ships, especially the last one Rose which was the first ship he captained.

I believe they were mostly steam ships and some were operated by P&O. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where I can find the right ships based on what is written here and locate details of where they operated and maybe even pictures of them, etc.

Any help would be appreciated. The certificate is attached.

LLoyds Register of Ships has an entry in 1852 for a ship named Rose:-
Rose Scw T.Rochford 151 London 1845 Brit&Irish Stm Pkt Co. Dublin Dub.London Built of iron.
This seems to fit the entry on his stated record.

Links to Lloyd's Register and the Mercantile Navy List.
http://www.maritimearchives.co.uk/
FindMyPast has a  Crew Agreement dated 1873 which may be him. Captain of the steam ship SIR FRANCIS DRAKE official number 68324. Born Deptford Kent age 53 Certificate number 1208?3?5
There are also two crew agreements for the same ship in 1874. They give the master as B H Higgins born Dublin age 56. Strange.
This site may assist you to look for him after 1851.

It looks like most of his career as Master was spent in the Home Trade, so it's doubtful if he has an entry in Lloyd's Captains Register.
I think the reply from Lisajj is erroneous.

Seaweed's hint at the Mercantile Navy List gives a few possibles in the 1849 volume if the list on the application form is "revised":-
William Fawcett (of Liverpool) ; Duke of Cambridge (of Dublin) ; Vanguard (of Dublin) ; Rose (of Dublin) ; Shamrock (of Dublin) ; Shannon (of Dublin) ; City of Limerick.

Still leaves Isabella,Royal Tar and Mercury.
