William O'Hara, Starch Green 1856
« on: Thursday 22 December 16 08:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

On the 1901 census William O'Hara says he was born in 1856 at Starck Green London, which I've since realised should be Starch Green, Hammersmith.

His 1885 online marriage record shows his father was John O'Hara a labourer.

I believe he died in 1908 in Islington.

I really would like to order his birth certificate as I'm making no progress in finding him on any earlier censuses. Other researchers seem happy to accept he is the son of Randall and Mary Ann O'Hara born 1856 in Limehouse..... but that doesn't seem to tie in with any degree of certainty.

I'm very confused about London registration areas. Please can some kind soul point me in the direction of a birth certificate for him.  My options seem to be Poplar Union (1856), St Luke Chelsea (1856), Stepney (1857) St Pancras (1856)

Just so confused about the registration area and genuki just adds to my confusion..... can't get to grips with it.

Many thanks  :)
Best wishes HL

Hammersmith would have been part of Kensington Registration District back then. Of the options you list, Chelsea is the closest. But there is no guarantee that the birth was registered.

Have you considered that his age may be incorrect in the 1901 census? There can often be several years variations in the ages.

There is a William born c1854 with father John a labourer and mother Catherine in Islington in 1861. I would be inclined to look at that family.

In 1881 he is at 30 Popham Street, Islington, with his mother and brother John.

Both Ancestry and Findmypast have indexed them O Hare.

Hello
If that family is right then mother's maiden name is Catherine Connally from registration of brothers John and Edward on new GRO site.
William would be the one in Poplar which has no maiden name attached.(The one in Chelsea mother's maiden name Warren)

ShuanJ, Jebber, Millipede and ciderdrinker, thank you all so much for helping me with this brickwall.

I feel that the likely answer is that his parents are John and Catherine. I have much to look into now and am grateful for your input.

Popham Street features heavily in that side of the tree and so is another clue. By 1882 William and his wife to be (a widow) had a daughter (Mary) and her birth was registered in Islington.

Need to find William on the 1881 census and thanks to Jebber I know what name to search under......just won't get around to looking till tonight but wanted to thank you all for your help.

Really feel confident I'm on the right path now, so huge thanks  :)
Best wishes HL
