I have also been told that Inconnu has been used when a couple have perhaps been married in a Protestant Church if one of the people are Roman Catholic....

Can you explain that please?  I don't understand.

Nor do I?

Does this suggest that only catholic born illegitimate children were stigmatised on marriage?

So does it have: John Brown married Mary Black (Inconnu)?

I know I have seen Scottish deaths whereby the full name is given with (Illegitimate) & they were Catholic records although I can't say I have seen a non-catholic death of an illegitimate person to compare.

Exactly. In the old baptism registers anyway. Still puzzled by this living Canadian lady's surname....maybe one day I'll know her well enough to ask her outright :)

Go on, ask her!

I can see one person on FB with that name, probably the same person that you know.
