Rebecca Dewart
« on: Thursday 22 December 16 19:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Looking for any information (prior to her marriage in Ryhope, County Durham, England in 1873), for:
Rebecca Dewart born on the 12th November 1848 (according to 1939 register) in Hillsborough, Down, Ireland.
Her father is named as Thomas Dewart on her marriage certificate.

Can anybody find her baptism, or any trace of her prior to 1873.

Thank you

Sue Roberts

To find a baptism you'll need to know what religion the family might have been (not all church records are online or even survive).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

from http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
Marriages Dec 1873   (>99%)
Dewart    Rebecca        Sunderland    10a   960
Nicholson    George        Sunderland    10a   960
The earlier census is 1871  no trace of George or Rebecca in Durham   or elsewhere. if he the later census 1881 shows the family growing, George b Kent was a coachman

Over in Ireland, there are Dewart  eg see
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/D/DenDey.htm  but no obvious Rebecca Dewart
Spelling variations inc Deward and Duart, so this could be a relation
William   DUART   .   Hillsborough   son of William Duart ; married Jane Neilson 10 Nov 1854   CR sse
but Hillsborough parish has Annahilt parish to theSW
I tried familysearch.org, emeraldancestors, and ancestryireland without success but didn’t check thoroughly variant spelling

there are entries in Ireland census 1901where there are DEWART LIVING in
Small Park (Hilleborough, Down)this adjoins hillsborough itself
Tullynore (Ballyworphy, Down) Ballyworphys is an adjoining toenland also a district name in censusold nameee http://www.placenamesni.org/resultdetails.php?entry=11183

Bingo on GenesReunited but you need to  join to get a peep at the trees
Rebecca   Dewart   1849   Ireland ...            Michael
George   Dewart           1848   Tullynore, Hillsboro...      DAVID
Joseph      Dewart   1838   Tullynore, Hillsboro...      DAVID

At PRONI under wills there is   Probate of the Will of John Dewart late of Tullynore County Down Farmer who died 10 May 1896 granted at Belfast to James Morrison of Edenticullo said County and George Scott of Tullymore Farmers.

I have run out of time, but I think that’s all I can offer
goodluck onwards.

Keepcalmwill, delighted you have joined in, well Tullynore is all of 2 miles SE of  Hillsborough on the Annahilt Road, so it sounds like you are not a walker exactly like me. Rebecca , William will know where some of the old homesteads are, whereas I live in England and
try http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/down/tithe-applotment-books/hillsborough-parish.php#. William may be know better Small Park or Lisburn St  in Hillsborough itself see http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

I had another look around http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/down/tithe-applotment-books/hillsborough-parish.php#.WPRuRVKZMwS
Duart, J.-Townland: Tullymore Year: 1830-Hillsborough-Down-
Duart, Robert-Townland: Magheralin Year: 1830-Hillsborough-Down-
Duart, S.-Townland: Tullymore Year: 1830-Hillsborough-Down-
Duart, Thomas-Townland: Cabra Year: 1830-Hillsborough-Down-
others live in Donacloney-Down, 1834-Saintfield –Down, and Portglenone-Antrim
Tullymore above is just a variant spelling for Tullynore townland
33 years later
from Griffiths valuation 1863 see http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/i
Duart   Robert      Hillsborough MAGHERADARTIN map ref 6
Duart   William   Hillsborough    BALLYWORFY map ref 23
Duart   John      Hillsborough    TULLYNORE map ref 17
Duart   Thomas   Hillsborough   TULLYNORE map ref 18
what happened to Cabra and Magheralin
to look the above up Tullynore sites, use a slider to change to modern map to locate existing roads then look up modern google map Edenticullo Road, then branch off going down Clogher road, then start looking looking NE before the road bends sharply to go SW.  there are 5 trees surrounding what looks what has been a building and that could be 17 and 18.  One of the four will be the oldest, your family tree and William might know anyway.

however a Duart onename study exists, starting with John Duart, b. 1784 in Hillsborough, County Down, Northern Ireland who immigrated to Canada
Read more at http://one-name.org/name_profile/duart/#EEje4lEoLC06CtBi.99 and contact Deborah Hershey

Good luck and enjoy family history I think the family were mainly Church of Ireland  for surviving church records see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/PHOTOSwords/HillsboroughAll.htm

My Robert Dewart was born Hillsborough, Cty Down c1842/44.  He went to Sunderland and married Barbara Haugh.  Roberts Father was Thomas Dewart.  Roberts daughter Margaret Alice Dewart was my Grandmother on Dads side.  She married John Richardson Meynell in Sunderland.

I am just starting to follow up on my Irish Dewarts now that there are more records online to try to confirm dates.

I don't have a Rebecca Dewart or any other Irish born Dewarts and it's been a few years since I have really looked closely at my records but I have a fair amount of information on the Dewarts of Sunderland.  It could be possible that Rebecca might  be Roberts sibling.  I need to look more closely at this though.

There are also Dewarts in Kent.

I have a Dewart connection in NE England who is related to Roberts lineage and is my second cousin.

Sunderland Durham, Kent - Mennell/ Mynell/Meynell Vaux Dowey Gibbons/Gibbins Dewart Haugh Calder/DNA match.
Updated 2024.  Many more names available
Long Melford Suffolk - Piper Sore Whittle Dread Bruning Durwin Howe Sansum Hardy
Enniscorthy County Wexford - Quinn Brien/Bryan Redmond Kavanagh Cullen Rourke Nowlan Byrne Power OBrien
County Down to Sunderland - marriage of Robert Dewart (born Ireland c1842) to Barbara Haugh 1869 in Sunderland, siblings Rebecca, William, Mary and more.

1863 from http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/i
Duart   Robert       Down   Hillsborough Map Ref MAGHERADARTIN 6
Duart   William   Down   Hillsborough Map Ref BALLYWORFY 23
Duart   John      Down   Hillsborough Map Ref  TULLYNORE 17
Duart   Thomas   Down   Hillsborough Map Ref TULLYNORE 17
you can look up each for detail of homestead and land rented or owned. and an 1860ish map that shows boundary of property and outline of buildings  Griffiths has a slight reputation of standardizing names.. However Stewart or Stuart might mean a religious spelling background or the enumerators.

The Valuation revision books exist  online at PRONI Belfast and might show departure or death of these 4 above individuals at PRONI
