Naming Patterns
« on: Friday 23 December 16 01:50 GMT (UK) »
What are the naming patterns used in Kintyre, Argyll??

Usual patterns are;
1st son after paternal grandfather;  2nd son after maternal grandfather; 3rd son after father.
1st dau after maternal grandmother; 2nd dau after paternal grandmother; 3rd dau after mother

Anyone have different order??

Thanks

If you google "scottish naming patterns" or similar search terms, you will find many examples on the internet. As an example:

Note that not all families followed this, some followed it to some extent, but it is not necessarily to be relied on. You can hit problems when say, both grandmothers were Mary, or both grandfathers were William, as they would not give two children the same name (though it does happen sometimes causing much confusion). As you know, for many of us there was a reasonably limited pool of common forenames which they chose from, so it is common for double ups to occur.

I am not aware that there was anything different about naming patterns in Argyll as opposed to elsewhere in Scotland.
