Draper look up [Billingshurst]
« on: Friday 23 December 16 21:12 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping someone can help me with a bit little puzzle. I am trying to trace the parents of my ancestor Ann[e] Draper [also spelt Drayper and Draiper] who was born in Billingshurst in the 1630s, however I have two possible candidates:

The first candidate is Ann Draper who was born in Billingshurst in 1631/32. Her parents were John Draper and Agnes Dench.

The second candidate is Anne Draper who was born in Billingshurst in 1634/5. Her parents were Samuel Draper and Dorothy Knight.

The puzzle arises because John and Samuel appear to have been brothers, which would make the two Annes cousins.

John Draper was born in 1594 to Peter Draper and Ellyne Grinfild [Ellen Greenfield]
Samuel Draper was born in 1599 also to Peter and Ellen.

I also know they had a daughter named Lydia in 1591. However I don't know when/where Peter and Ellen were married

John and Agnes also had another son named Caleb in 1637/8, whilst Samuel and Dorothy also had the following children:

Samuel - born 1631
John - born 1633
Sarah - born 1636/7

I don't know anymore about these people so it would be interesting to know if anyone can provide me with any details regarding any marriages or burials for them.

Thanks

Matt

Peter DRAPIER m Helen GREENFIELD 23 Sep 1582 Billingshurst

Peter was buried in Billingshurst 29 Jan 1618.  He was a carpenter, inventory of his estate is at WSRO.

I've found reference to a Caleb Draper, cordwainer, of Billingshurst at WSRO: inventory in 1683.

Hi Nell

Thanks for that info. I think I had the marriage year noted down somewhere but not the exact date so thanks for that. It would be useful to know if either of these people mentioned Anne Draper. If only Peter and Caleb had left wills. Hopefully the people who took the inventories will be familiar.

Hiya

Do you know which court Caleb's will was proved in? I have found that the Family History Centre at Kew has some copies of wills proved in Sussex courts so if I can check the will there it will be helpful. If you know the reference it will be great.

Many thanks

Matt

Hi Matt
The original will of Caleb Draper of Billingshurst, Cordwainer, 1682, proved in the Chichester Consistory Court, is available on Family Search.
If you register on the website you can see it here when logged in -
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-D19S-WJD?mode=g&i=684

Plenty of Sussex probate records are freely available on there. And many Sussex PRs and BTs! Including Billingshurst, the microfilm with the first registers on starts here -
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DRC4-MZ?i=2&cat=451928

Can't download these images, take screenshots is a way round that!
Kind regards
John

Hi John

Thanks for that. I am registered with Familysearch but I didn't think of looking there for the will. That will be my next stop. Do you know if I can view other wills proved in that court via Familysearch?

Thanks again

Matt

Just found the will, thx again for the help. Do you know if I can download/print a copy at the Family History Centre in the National Archives at Kew?

Do you know how I can find the probate records of other people who had wills proved in this or the Archdeaconry court? Is there an index? How did you find the web address for the page with Caleb's will on it?

Thanks
Matt
