If things don't improve give your internet provider a call to explain the problems experienced.
[With the modem powered up the provider can test the circuit]
As I mentioned earlier do not switch off the modem when not in use!
And yes to slowdown of internet over Christmas, yesterday mine slowed down by 50%

Check out samknows.com to see what fibres based services are available in your area.

A router swop from your provider is usually the first step and even BT do not usually charge for that. If you insist on a visit KCOM may charge if they find no fault.

Make sure the router is plugged into the master socket which are usually in the hall or front room. If it has a plate over half of it, remove that to reveal the master socket that is not affected by the house's internal wiring. That socket gives the best quality service available to you using copper, and then decide.

Also, check that the wires do not go through a tree's canopy. Most fibre systems use the same wiring from the street cabinet.
