If you tell us what his name was Keith, I'm sure someone on here will be able to help.

Although Matthew/Louisa/Joseph/Edward dont name their Father as deceased on their Marriages FreeREG it appears to me that he was by 1844

VINE, JOHN , age 70***
GRO Reference: 1844  S Quarter in THE SPALDING UNION  Volume 14  Page 306

So Birth c 1774

As you know John is not at Home in 1841;
Elizabeth Vines   60
Elizabeth Vines   30
Japhes Vines   15
Mathew Vines   20
Joseph Vines   2

John/Elizabeth as Parents for John vine looks correct. Also him being Christened in Glinton, Northamptonshire 1773. (on Anc)

Reason I agree as I have found;
John VINE Married Elizabeth SOUTHWELL, 24 Dec 1772, St Benedict, Glinton, Northamptonshire
(Source FreeREG)

Explains your Matthew's second name :)

Elzabeth Vine Snr and Jnrs Burials are on FreeREG 1856/1874 age 77/68

Trish :)

Thanks David, that does explain why I can't find him in the census for 1841, I had found he was from Glinton area before and went to look round the grave yard for Vine's but did not find any or Southwells either but some of the stones are difficult to read. There are two volumes of Stamford Mercury if I remember correct in the Spalding Gentlemen's Society but can't remember what years, will have to look next time I am there.
regards
Keith

I am not sure if this is of interest but I have a William Vine on my tree, born in Water Newton, Huntingdonshire, who married Charlotte Burbage of Werrington, the next village to Glinton, in 1841.

I seem to remember researching this family but they are not direct relatives. One of William's daughters, Mary Ann Vine, married John Anton whose aunt married one of my relatives.

I must have looked at William's marriage details at some point and it gave his father as Matthew Vine, a Miller. Matthew appears on the 1841 census in Alwalton, Huntingdonshire, but as an agricultural labourer, born out of county. Matthew's age ties in with him being the son of John and Elizabeth Vine of Glinton - i.e. John's brother - although no definite proof.
