Local knowledge to help trace Grimsby baby please
« on: Tuesday 27 December 16 10:43 GMT (UK) »
Newspaper reports of a missing Grimsby baby

Is part of a major scandal about a couple who took babies from unmarried mothers and placed them with married couples .....!

Lily Kitchen is the only single mother named
I think because her mother took the matter to police

Lily Kitchen/kitchings  from great Grimsby
answered an advert placed in Leeds mercury
from a lady without children who would like to adopt a baby for a premium of £11

The baby (boy?) Was born around April 1907....
Handed over aged only 14 days to a couple using an alias

When lily s mother got suspicious and a search for baby ensued

20th may according to  derby daily telegraph acouple were charged with having caused death

Gloucester news reports child to be living
Meanwhile other cases emerged

But the child traced to workhouse infirmary may well be the Grimsby baby

the couple  Leo selwyn and Lottie
Aka Herbert smith and Lottie Roberts aged 20
Were living I Liverpool taken into custody on remand

Baby turned up alive and well in Lincoln but was he returned to the Kitchen family ?was his birth  registered by lily or was he registered under name of new family

There are a few 1907 Kitchen babies .Don't know lily.s age or parents name to find her on census before and after ....

Any extra insight about this family appreciated .

Hi
GRO indexes with no maiden name possibly suggests Harry Leighton Kitching reg June Q 1907 Grimsby.
He appears to be living with Grandparents Tom and Francis in 1911, Tom and Fanny Kitchinbg are living in Grimsby in 1901 with children including Lily born c 1889.  RG13/3090  50/17
Only a suggestion though.

Thanks so much Cath

There is1907  a baptism record for Henry Leighton Kitchen on FindMyPast too

It does link with lily
Her mothers must have been quite formidable
Going to police and court despite potential scandal after finding such an apparently good adoptive home for grand child

I wonder if they persued the birth father for some maintenance ....Leighton could be a clue to his surname

I won't eliminate the others just yet . Lily was quite a popular name too but not too many Kitchen families
