I would take the published trees with a very big block of rock salt

Indeed I do, Gadget!! -  and I certainly haven't added any of those names to my tree - just holding them there for future searching.  There are some monstrous assertions on some trees.

William, I totally agree - very unlikely!

Interesting that the family have been handed some good stories about this family though.  One, which has been handed down, is that William (father of Mary Ellen and James) was head Gardener at Cally(?) House - I know he was a wood cutter and forrester . . .  but cannot substantiate the rest - would love to be able to rule it in or out though.  I am just looking it up to find out more about it.  :-\

Try page 24 of this link - maybe this is where the story comes from -  - - but which William Pearson??  The one we are looking at didn't have 6 children, and didn't live in that neck of the woods as far as we can tell.   And there were rather a lot of William Pearsons around .  . . .  :-\   Hmmm -

Even his father William only had 4 children - in another location.

What do you think about James Wilson born 13 Mar 1791, Torthorwald, Dumfries, Scotland - IGI.

Do we give him a cigar?

Also just sent Gadget some images of prospective marriages for James Wilson ??  (Can't post them here :-\)

And a birth for Isobel Pearson 1809 to William and Helen - can't find her further along the line though.

:'( :'( :'(  Spent a heap of new credits getting wrong answers today!   :'(
Ah well - all part of the chase.

To answer your question, Wiggy, I feel that unless some hard evidence turns up finding Janet's parents is a tough one -  correct me if I am wrong we do not actually know that her father was a James?

I have been looking as Gadget suggested at the tax  lists on Scotland's Places for Crawford Parish and can see no reference to the surname Pearson.

This search has certainly taken in a lot of interesting resources - noting that the marriage of James Pearson and Agnes Closs had them both working in the asylum I googled and found that the Wellcome Library has digitised and put online records for the asylum in Dumfries. It was an interesting browse but did not find any staffing records.

Going back to the Pearson's in Leadhills and the bio. I quoted earlier I wonder what his sources were? - I can see nothing else online to show that there was a landowner called David Pearson in Leadhills in the 1700's.

One of the online trees has posted the birth records for Thomas, Susanna and John Pearson (other children of William and Helen). This is one of those times that I would love SP to offer a subscription service!

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

So would I, William!    ;D

No, I don't think we can prove that Janet's father was James.

S P are making lots of money from us on this search!  I will nearly have spent a year's subs soon .. . and that is only me!

I am pretty sure our mob are not connected to the landowning David!   ;)

The cert for Isobel, b 1809, eldest of the family you have just mentioned, I downloaded today . . .  had the record only from IGI before - definitely correct, but she disappears off the radar immediately, and I can find no further mention of her.   As Gadget was saying elsewhere, so many happenings weren't written down in the records.

I feel we have just about squeezed this line dry now . . .   Have we?

We have learnt so much more about the family than just what happened to Mary Pearson.

I won't lock it in case something turns up,  but many thanks for all the assistance, everyone who has contributed, but specially Gadget and William for all the certificate buying to prove things.

Wiggy.    :) 8)

P.S.   Maybe I will put up the other side of the family soon . . .  The McDonald side !
