Patrick Power and Bridget Murphy
« on: Wednesday 28 December 16 20:19 GMT (UK) »
Patrick and Bridget Power are found in Halifax, Nova Scotia where they baptize 4 children between 1839 and 1845. I have recently found a marriage record for 1864 for one of the children. Now I know more than 'just Ireland', it gives Waterford as the place of origin.

These 4 children may be the tail end of a larger family.
Where do I look for a marriage in the 1820's+ for Patrick and Bridget?

The family story is that they were heading to Boston where Patrick's brother (name not known) had already emigrated. But somehow never made it.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Irish Catholic Parish registers online- some may go back far enough to find the marriage but for that period it may not list parents-

There are several woman called Bridget Power born in Waterford who died in Halifax. Do you know when Patrick and Bridget died?

the 1871 census in Halifax has a couple Patrick and Bridget Power, but I have no idea if these are the correct ones. This Patrick is a carpenter. They don't appear to be in the 1881 census. The earlier censuses are almost useless.
I cannot find suitable deaths for either of them.
This Patrick may have died about 1875 as he disappears from the trade directories about then.

I fear that cemetery records are the only place to find them.

I have made a start on the Waterford prs. So many parishes and no idea if it is Waterford town or county!

Any addresses in Halifax for them? What was the name of their child married in 1864?

That was Nicholas, he married Mary Jane Sheehan. I have lots of info on him. That 1st marriage of his in 1864 was the tough one to find. He was a career police officer in Halifax.
Patrick and Bridget were in West Halifax, Ward 2, ages 73 and 66 in 1871.
Nicholas and Mary Jane were also in West Halifax but Ward 1.

Didn't find as much as I'd hoped  :-\

A Bridget Power, age 77, born Co. Waterford, married, died 23 July 1873 Cunard? Sr., informant's name hard to read but interestingly the next entry is for a Bridget Power (age 38) on the same date but different address (informant Wm Power).

I see that Nicholas Power's 1938 death certificate fives parents as Patrick Power & Mary Sheehan but Nicholas' daughter may have just given her mother's name rather than her grandmother's name.

Nicholas' name didn't ring any bells at first but then I realised that he was involved in the investigation of the murder of a connection of my grandmother's which was quite a sensational case at the time and even recently has been written about and disputed.

Thanks Aghadowey.

Yes I think Nick's daughter was a bit mixed up when she registered his death.
The age of Bridget Power who died in 1873 does not match the age of the one in the 1871 census.
That worries me. I will have another look There are so many Powers in Halifax and Waterford and so many of them are Patrick and Bridget!

None of Nicholas's 3 siblings who were born in Halifax were named Patrick or Bridget, so I am pretty sure that they had more children before they arrived in Halifax.

I have trawled through 2 parishes on the website you gave me.

Thanks again.
