J.D.Jones fruit, vegetable and fish merchant in the Rhondda Valley
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 08:37 GMT (UK) »
I am currently typing up my father's autobiography and have seen that his parents managed two shops for J.D.Jones around 1917 to 1919 until they lost their jobs because of the Depression. As far as I can make out, John Angus Hood managed the Tonypandy shop and his wife Sadie Hood managed another in Trealaw.

Just wondering if anyone can find anything interesting in connection with this. I have found a newspaper article in The Rhondda Leader about a break-in at the Tonypandy store, but would be interested in finding some advertisements or editorials from that time.

As always, any information or assistance is very much appreciated :)

J.D. Jones was my Grandfather he originally had the two shops you were enquiring about. I don't know whether this is coincidence but my Grandmothers  maiden name was Ada Poiner her Mother was Matilda Hood ! I cannot tell you what happened to your family if it is them. I could make further enquiries with older members of my family.
:). I could ask one of my older relatives he is in his late 80's but I doubt if he would know anything .  J.D died at a very young age leaving Ada with 6 Children 5 boys and a girl. They all went into the Fruit Trade.  I hope this has been of some help to your research .   Ruth

Thank you so much for responding, Ruth. I have to say this web site always amazes me in how it brings people together.

I found your reply very interesting - particularly the surname Hood because my grandfather adopted that surname around 1908 from Webb, along with his many half-siblings, and no-one in our living family knows why. But that is another story!!

My interest in JD Jones comes from my father writing about his childhood. I have an excerpt from this which relates to the closing of your grandfather's fruit store which I would be happy to email to you if you are interested, or share in a private message. It is too long to add here. Please let me know as I would be keen to hear whether it triggers any memories.

Kind regards
Cherryl
