Eyam/Foolow parish records look up please
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 12:23 GMT (UK) »
If anyone has access to parish records of Eyam, I would be very grateful for a look up.  My husband's ancestor was Henry Davis bn abt 1784 in Foolow.  He and his brother John (bn abt 1781) moved to Grassington, Yorkshire where they were lead miners and after their death they were commemorated with this rather fabulous story memorial http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=davis&GSiman=1&GScid=2594708&GRid=159837472&

I would be grateful if anyone does have access to the parish records of Eyam, to let me know if Henry was baptised in Eyam and who his parents were.

Thank you.

No it's not good, tourists must be disappointed. It's been wet and stormy. Today it's 15 C with a cool breeze. Lots of clouds and only intermittent sun. We need the water as last winter was dry and our dams were almost empty. This is live cctv from Troodos ski area

same parents all baptised at Eyam

John 1782

Ann 1785

Thomas 1787

Joseph 1789

The Eyam story of the plague is well known in the area. I used to live not too far away in north Nottinghamshire.

Thanks Pat.  The story of Eyam and the plague is amazing - the fortitude and forethought of the villagers is inspirational.

Possible marriage of parents of the children above

Name           Thomas Davies
Event Type   Marriage
Event Date   25 May 1779
Event Place   Hope, Hope, Derbyshire, England
Gender           Male
Marital Status   Single
Spouse's Name   Alice Drabble
Spouse's Marital Status   Single

Can't find a Henry Davis at all, there are several born in the area but nothing like Davis and in such a small place I would think the family would be known by the vicar. Found John and Thomas later just in case Thomas was known by another name due to it being the same as his father. John a lead miner but Thomas a shepherd. Sorry.  One thought did they take him in from another family?

Hmmm.

One online source suggested that Henry and John were half brothers, but didn't give any sources to back up that assertion - but I don't think that would work anyway because Henry would come between John and Ann who had the same parents.

Perhaps he was adopted from someone else in the village.

Thank you so much for looking up that information.

The Davis family I found were still alive during the census of 1851 and 61 so not the same.

As I can't find Henry and his brother John were they Catholics or non conformists?
