Passenger Lists problem
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 17:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks,
Having a lot of problems finding when someone came to UK from Eastern Europe and would like some suggestions as where to look.
For instance of one:-
Joseph Mazorkoff 1867-1934(b.Russia) and wife Rachel Cutner 1870-1945.
There second child Samuel was born in Glasgow in 1894 and presume that is where they landed. Arrival must have been around 1892/1893.

I have tried variations of the four surnames I am searching on  Anc.FindMyPast and Jewishgen, but to no avail.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Passenger lists between UK and Europe don't exist on the whole. The exception is when the ship was going further - to ports beyond Europe and the Mediterranean.

From Eastern Europe they're unlikely to have landed at Glasgow.

The usual route was via Hamburg, Bremen or from a Dutch port to the east coast of the UK (e.g. Leith (for Edinburgh), Hull, Grimsby etc., if not London), and then by train across to the west coast. Inclusive tickets could be obtained which included the train journey, as the route was originally intended for those continuing their journey to the USA.

For background information, see here ...
http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http://www.movinghere.org.uk/galleries/histories/jewish/journeys/journeys.htm
(Scroll down to Journey to England etc.)

You say you have searched Ancestry, but have you searched the Hamburg Passenger Lists (worldwide subscription needed)? You will need to use germanised forms for the Russian names, and be very creative with the spelling. The handwriting can be very difficult and there are many mistranscriptions.

Maggsie - Yes Abraham is their son and the childreen were born in Glasgow, Hull, Bristol and Liverpool lastly where they lived.

Graham Simons - It is possible they were going to the USA and either decided to stay in the UK or as in some case unscrupolous Captains told immigrants they were in the USA when they were in the UK.  Something I read a long time ago on the internet.  Regards Outgoing Passengers I cannot find anything in their name or similar in case they were going to the USA and never went.

Book box - Don't have Anc. W/W, but had a look to see if their name or one sounding similar, but found nothing.  Seem to remember that the Bremen Records had been destroyed.

Thank you all and I appreciate your time and effort.

Hi Maggsie,
You wonderful person!

Know about Samuel.  Interested in:-
Moses - only know he came over to the UK late 1933 and went back Jan.1934.  No info when he went to Canada.
Leah - married Lazarus Goldstein and they went to USA.  I have two seperate records that probally match.  She divorced and remarried a Ginsburg and then divorced again and married a Ross. Dead end as to what happened to her. So your extra info would be useful.
Bertha - Knew she went to Canada, but when.  So extra info welcome.

Thanking you for all your kind consideration and time and ...
I wish you are Very Happy and Prosporous New Year 2017.
