John Hopwood b. 1798-1806
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 19:08 GMT (UK) »
I would be so grateful if anyone has access to John's baptism records so I can verify his parents. I know he was born in Weston Shropshire and married to Anne Davies in 1825 in Madeley Shropshire and that my direct ancestor Rebecca was born in 1837. My difficulty is that although many family trees suggest that John's parents were Joseph Hopwood b.c. 1752 and Mary Broughall, I cannot find proof of this. (The discrepancy in John's birth date is due to varying ages on the censuses). His baptism is often quoted from parish records as 1st March 1798 but I just need proof!
I would be really grateful if anyone has access to his record.
Many thanks

The John Hopwood b Prees is in Kirkdale Liverpool in 1851 and shown as born 1802.  Still in Kirkdale in 1861

In 1851 - your John is in Shropshire shown as b Weston 1803.

However - there is another John Hopwood born Weston 1804 who also has a wife Ann who is living in Staffs in 1851

Thanks so much Keyboard86,
I saw that but wondered if there was a baptism record anywhere.

The main problem is that there isn't simply a place called plain Weston in Shropshire.   There are in fact Cold Weston, Weston Lulling, Weston Rhyn, Weston under Redcastle, Weston Cotton and Weston and Wixhill!!!

The only 'Weston' that I have found that included any Hopwood's was Weston under Redcastle.

Best I can offer I'm afraid.

All on other post was from FreeREG, this from Familysearch.Org;

MARRIAGE;
12 October 1826, Moreton Corbet, Shropshire
Ann LAWLEY to John HOPWOOD

May I ask where Ann Davies comes from?
(Edit, got it Familysearch.Org)
But wrong Marriage for your John!

Rebeccas Hopswoods Baptism has Ann Lawley's Parents as Joseph/Rebecca

John PARKER and Rebeccas 1853 Marriage has her abode as Monmore Green which fits with her Brother Samuels Burial.
A Thomas OWEN was a Witness at that Marriage.
He married ELIZABETH Hopwood 9 March 1846, Her Father J Hopwood a Furnaceman
So another Child for John/Ann
JOSEPH Hopwood married 1852, Father John a Labourer
(Source FreeREG)

I think the the John Hopwood a Blacksmith was the one who married Ann Davies.

Its so easy to follow the wrong lines with out pircashing Birth Certs of Children born post 1837.
You are lucky the the GRO Index with Mothers maiden names is now up and running.

Also thanks to FreeREG for its wonderful Volunteers we have Ann mn and Parents names.

Trish :)
