I have looked at the baptismal records for the halligans james,mary, george.
they all have a witness sarah halligan. i have found a sarah and james halligan in the 1851 census.
do you think that this could be my great granddad?

I think it would be too difficult to tell.

You would need to find a Sarah Halligan 1871/1881/1891
She could be a sister or sister in law. She might even be his mother but usually a grandparent would not be a godparent.

It would be interesting to check George's birth certificate and another sibling because of the different mother's names.

James is never found with Jane is he?

It is strange that Jane Cashmore cannot be found either other than the marriage to James Allen. This is from memory though so could be wrong.
