Looking for marriage of Thomas Child and Elizabeth
« on: Friday 30 December 16 15:59 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Child and his wife Elizabeth baptised 12 children in Pulborough between 1770 and 1790. I guess from this production pattern they would be in their early - to mid twenties when they married and expect a marriage to be about 1768/9. But I can't find a likely marriage, please can anyone help?

Added
A considerable number of Ancestry trees have Thomas marrying Elizabeth Furlonger in Ewhurst on 3 April 1768. But that Thomas and Elizabeth were baptising children in Ewhurst at the same time as mine were baptising children in Pulborough, so that can't be the right marriage

There was another marriage in Surrey the year before by Marriage Licence (on FindMyPast):

Thomas Child of Hascombe, Surrey married Elizabeth Street of Dunsfold, Surrey on 13/12/1767 Dunsfold.   (Thomas being of Hascombe does not necessarily mean he was from that parish, just where he was living (working) at the time).

Thomas Child aged 66 buried 24/3/1813 Pulborough on FreeReg i.e. bc.1746/7 (can't see a burial there for wife Elizabeth).

Familysearch shows a Thomas Child bp.26/8/1746 Dunsfold, son of Thomas (no mothers name shown) which could be him.

Thank you that looks a possibility. The burial in Pulborough of Thomas Child says he was a blacksmith and there is an apprentice tax entry dated 1762 for a Thomas Child apprenticed to John Baxter a blacksmith in Hascombe. 1762 is when tax paid on apprenticeship not necessarily when it started, but would fit quite well with Thomas being born abt 1746/7 (calculated from age on burial record).

There's a later burial of a Thomas in Pulborough (1845), his age at death would make his birth about 1768/9, so possibly a first child of Thomas snr and Elizabeth. Can't find his baptism at Pulborough.

I suspect that this may be Elizabeth Street's baptism on familysearch:

Elizabeth Street bp.4/3/1748 Chiddingfold, Surrey, dau. of William Street.

I noted that T & E did not have a son Thomas baptised at Pulborough and have just found this on familysearch:

Thomas Child bp.July 1768 Chiddingfold, Surrey, son of Thomas.   It was a common practice for the first child to be baptised in the mothers home parish.

I'd just found the Chiddingfold baptism as well, thank you for finding a possible baptism for Elizabeth, that makes it more likely it's the right family. Unfortunately I can't find Thomas jnr in 1841 to see if he was bic or not. He may not have been living in Pulborough, but brought back there  for burial.

Just realised I got the day wrong for the marriage - should be 15th December 1767 (just seen that FreeReg have got this incorrectly listed as 1777 not 1767 (as it is on familysearch, FindMyPast and Ancestry).

Thomas Child is in Pulborough in 1841 but surname transcribed as Chield - shown as not born in county.   He was also a Blacksmith.

Plus think I've found Elizabeth's burial - as Childs - at Pulborough on 21/7/1828 aged 79.

Thanks again, so that fits with Thomas jnr born in Surrey not Sussex.
And I 've found a marriage for Thomas (even more snr) to Mary Baxter in Dunsfold on 26 May 1743. And his son was apprenticed to a John Baxter (maybe related)
