How Old is the the Elm Tree Pub, Elmton Derbyshire Please?

Happy New Year All.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help me with the following question.

My 4 x great grandfather was John Hodkin born 1784 in either Barlborough or Elmton.

In the 1841 Census he is recorded as a Publican in Elmton and as Elmton is such a rural area I wondered if there would only be the one Pub there at that time.

I am trying to work out if the Elm Tree was the Pub that he ran.

Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in anticipation.

Liz

Hi Liz.

Here it is called the Elm Tree Inn:
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=17&lat=53.2550&lon=-1.2469&layers=168&right=BingHyb

So I wonder if he would be called an Innkeeper if that was where he worked? I believe there is a difference between an Inn (lodgings, food and drink) and a Pub (mainly drink  ;)), but that distinction may not have been made in the 1841 census.

Another possibility is that he was a publican in Elmton Parish which covers a larger area as you can see on the map. Although the map is later than 1841 I can't see another pub marked on it in the surrounding area. Despite Elmton and other villages being small then and now, they still may have had more than one pub.

If he had children registered around this time it might be worth purchasing one (or more) birth certificates to see what they say about his occupation and address.

Sorry I couldn't help but I thought you may find the map interesting.  :)

Per Pigot's 1835 Directory, John Hodkin was the Landlord of the Plough and Dove

Do a Google search for plough & dove + elmton will give you the various directory entries.

John Hodkin also in the 1821/2 Directory at the Plough and Dove http://www.rosie.pterosaur.org.uk/Scar3.htm

So far I haven't found a mention of the Plough and Dove after 1835 or the Elm Tree before 1842. It is possible that one replaced the other in a rebuild or makeover.

Hello all

Thank you all for your postings which I will study with great interest.

By 1851 John Hodkin has moved to Weigh Lane in the Park district of Sheffield and is recorded as a Wheelwright and Master Joiner so that ties in.

I will try and follow your instructions and am very appreciative of your help.

Kind regards and once again thanks to all.

Liz
