It's better placed on the London & Middlesex board where those with local knowledge can help.

which was managed by the Stepney Board of Guardians
Surely in 1855 it wasn't?
Whitechapel was subsumed into Stepney BG much later.

The last bit must surely be WKH, so in a workhouse. Most likely for mother would be M E - Mile End although it doesn't really look like an M. But in the parish column for Daniel Brien it has what must be Mile End New Town - M E N T, so probably it is. Yes C C will be Christ Church

If in doubt about what it is you are looking at, see if there is a LMA reference at the beginning of the book (first images) and check in their catalogue. Or ancestry may give it.

(Thanks, Dawn)

The left-hand column is the Parish to which each person was chargeable.
CC = Christ Church (Spitalfields).

The 4th column across is Residence.
Father in CC Wkh (= Christ Church Workhouse)
Mother in WC Wkh (= Whitechapel Workhouse)

I agree it's confusing. But I would read this as meaning that James’ normal address was 3 Popes Head Court, but he had recently been in the Christ Church workhouse.

On 8 December 1855 he was admitted from that workhouse to the Whitechapel Infirmary, with his sons William and George.

The boys’ mother was meanwhile in the Whitechapel workhouse.

On 14 December 1855, James discharged himself, his wife and the two boys from the care of the Stepney guardians, destination not stated.

Hi Jonw65
Yes, honestly the entry is 1855 and i took the stepney note from the text memo on ancestry.
Document is dated 1855, maybe ancestry's entry is wrong with stepney, won't be the first time.
Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

I think it is Christ Church as that was a local workhouse nearby.

So just to finish things, James Bean is the father of William & George.
He discharged himself with his wife and childred (William & George).
Is that how i'm reading it?

Dawnsh, nearly completed now.
Thanks for your patients & help.

Bookbox, again you came to the rescue, my many thanks.
That really cleared it up, thank you.

Dawnsh, thank you for keeping all the info together :)
I'm a newbie and learning the rules so i'll be careful where to place things in future.

Thank you :)

Well, Bookbox is probably right (usually is!)
It could well be WC Wkh - Whitechapel workhouse
If they had two of them.

Confusing, yes.
