Jim - re the South Wales Borderer - the war diary is under Div Troops 19th Div.  While it is very clear with its list of killed and wounded, it doesn't say what the cause was.  Two of the four companies were resting, the other two were engaged in maintaining tramway track.  The supposition would be that they were being shelled while working.  You may be able to work your trench map magic, they were working near the "Stuff Redoubt" and "Stuff" trench is mentioned.

Steve100 - Doesn't answer the question I'm afraid but does round out the picture a bit.  Forces War Records say they have casualty lists but although I don't have a sub (deliberately) his name can be searched for - zilch.  The "Genealogist" site also says it has casualty lists, I have no experience of using it.

Was looking under 19th. Div. but could only see ref. to the 58 Bde. with no 5/SWB. didn't realise they left in Dec. 1914.
Found Stuff Redoubt for someone a few weeks ago. Quite difficult to find. I'll have a look & see if I can find the post.

This map shows the British front line as a solid blue line at 13/9/16. The dotted line is the gain made by 30/11/16 which as you can see includes the Stuff trench & Redoubt which was taken in October.
Still haven't located the diary so can't say exactly where on this map the 5th. were.
Got there in the end.
I notice part of the Coy. were also working on a tramway. Although not on this map they did build one running E. Of Thiepval South to North, branched off East but finished before Stuff Redoubt.

I'm not sure how we got from 5/SWB to AIF.
I was answering the poster.
Thanks Jim.

The reason I piped up at all was that the OP asked "Also would these men be sent straight back to the front when recovered?"
and from my answer you will see that I had some knowledge of that.
I also wanted to point out that return to the battlefield occurred even if a soldier had been wounded on more than one occasion.
I was not aiming to distract.
Regards

Again thank you all for your replies, its all fascinating stuff. The more I read the war diary the more I am amazed at the courage of the Pioneers along with every other person involved.Sorry if I caused any confusion, but I know what I was looking for, just have to remember where I found it before.

Thank you all for your time and effort.

As you can see from the map the Germans had 3 Redoubts on the ridge N. of Thiepval ( there was a 4th. South called Hohezollern Redoubt) meaning the British had to push uphill while the Germans had a good view of the open ground.
When the Pioneers got there it was their job to repair, deepen & build up the trench system so that the Army could hold onto it. This was done under continuous shelling. They were also building a tramway.
Looking at the diary for that day your man was one of a large number that were wounded which leads me to believe they were caught on open ground rather than in the trenches.
