Emily Barnett
« on: Monday 02 January 17 08:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Looking for some help with Emily Barnett  She was in Brixworth Workhouse in 1901 and 1911 with her daughter Violet. She's listed as born in Manchester in 1884. She married Joseph Wykes in Spratton in 1917.

I've been trying to track down a birth record, a location in 1891 (appreciate this might not be Northants) and any information from the workhouse.

Thanks in advance.
Debbie

The only birth registered in the name of Emily Barnett in Lancashire 1882/6 was in Ormskirk June Q 1882.

In 1891 Emily Barnett (b 1882) was living with her parents in Old Turnpike Road, Ormskirk. Father Henry, his wife Ann, and stepson James Rigby (age 17). ( Courtesy of Family Search)

The names of Henry Barnett and Ann Rigby on same page Dec Q 1880 Ormskirk.

P S  Ignore this. The family are still together in 1901.

Hi,

I looked at that record and that Emily is still with Henry and Ann in 1901 so can't be the same one.
I guess the workhouse had her place of birth as Manchester so that is what they put on both the census' but maybe that wasn't quite right.

Thanks for help,
Debbie

You could possibly get her birthdate from the 1939 register (FindMyPast) She and Joseph are there but on the free index her birthyear says 1885 ( I can t access full record to read date) which would nt seem to tally with her death at aged 77 in 1960.
A marriage certificate could help if it named a father.

There are records for Brixworth Workhouse at Northants Record Office. Unfortunately not as many Admissions / Inmates books as some Workhouses, though.

You can see what there is at http://nro.adlibhosting.com/search/advanced

Search for "Brixworth Union" rather than Brixworth Workhouse, and put PL in the Reference box

What I don't understand is why Emily was in Brixworth Workhouse, rather than being returned to her home town under the settlement rules. So there may be discussions about her in the Guardians minutes, or in the letter books.

In 1901/1911 Emily is listed as "imbecile"/"feeble-minded" so perhaps it was not possible for her to return.  :-\

But, then, how come she'd got down here anyway?

Employer moved to the area, then not overseen her, then abandoned her?  :'(

I wondered about that, and thought it may have only been said as she had an illegitimate daughter at age 16/17.
