Missing part of record
« on: Monday 02 January 17 11:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello, hoping someone can help. This is another question on the record of my partner's grandfather, the other's being in the first world war section. He rejoined the Navy in 1939 despite having been pensioned off and registered exempt from service after retiring in 1937. However while his record has him being promoted to Temporary Acting Bosun in late 1940 while based at HMS Victory, that's as far as it goes. However from the memories of his son, plus a couple of certificates from 1943 and 1944 he was at HMS Dorlin in Argyll, Scotland for a number of years before finishing up on HMS Alastor in Burnham-on-Crouch. None of this is recorded on his Service Record and I was wondering why? I know at the time the work at HMS Dorlin was to do with the training of Commandos and pretty secret, however it wasn't that secret that they didn't allow family to live up there with them? If anyone has any ideas as to why the record stops in 1940 I would appreciate greatly.
Kind Regards, Mark.

Hello Mark,

Sometimes parts of records go missing, I would get back to them and ask if they can find any more, tell them what you know of his later service.

I applied for my husband's Army records, a chunk of them were missing when they arrived. Unfortunately they were unable to locate the missing section,  luckily I was able to fill in most of the gaps myself, as I had accompanied him on all his postings.

Thanks Jebber, I think I will get on to them, but this is the record he had, I think, from when he finally retired.

I didn't realise they were his own records you were referring to, I thought you had applied for them. There may well be further records, if want you apply for them, unfortunately there is a £30 cost involved.
