Glover Pembrokeshire farming family 1700s
« on: Monday 02 January 17 13:12 GMT (UK) »
I was told by my grandfather that Samuel Glover (b.1754) was one of four brothers of Pembrokeshire farming family. Samuel went to Surrey/ London (my direct descendant), one went to Ireland (his son may have been John William Glover, grandfather of the famous musician James Mackay Glover), one went to France or Belgium, and one to Scotland. The last may be wrong as a descendant was the composer Stephen Glover who was born in London and whose father was George Glover.

I am looking to obtain more information on the brothers' parents and origins in Wales and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi

Welcome to rootschat

It may help us if you can give a bit more information on your Samuel (bn 1754)

Who did he marry and where
When did he die & where

Which of his children is your direct line, where & when were they born and do they appear on census.

What evidence do you have that Samuel is from Pembrokeshire

Thank you Rosie.

I believe that Samuel Glover came to England from Wales and worked as a land steward at Kempton Park for a Mr. Fish.

He married Margaret Ayres on 3rd June 1781, Kensington, Middlesex.

He died in 1855 and was buried at St Giles, Camberwell.

I am the direct line from his son Thomas born 1782 - my son is the 8th consecutive Thomas Glover born since.

I don't actually have proof that he came from Wales. It's just what was passed down through the family.

I hope this is helpful.

Thank you, that gives us something to look at.  :)

The 1855 death of a Samuel Glover gives age as 72 according to the GRO death index though ages at death are unreliable.  This gives a birth year of approx 1783.

This death looks like the Samuel Glover who was born in Croydon showing on 1851 census

I assume this is the baptism you have for your Thomas  :)

Thomas Glover
Baptism Date   26 April 1782
Mortlake, St Mary
Father Samuel Glover
Mother Margaret

I have just seen the burial entry for Samuel who died in 1855 - abode Workhouse age 92 and was buried St Giles  ::)   The 1851 census entry I gave was for the workhouse so age is wrong somewhere presuming it is the same man.

Thank you very much. It may be that we were missing a generation (Samuel's father).

That Samuel burial /death could be a brother of Thomas or his father depending on the correct age though the place of birth of Croydon would not link to a Mortlake baptism.

Other children baptised to Samuel & Margaret at Mortlake were Samuel & James  (twins according to the register) on 31 July 1785.  (Not to be confused with another James born Barnes to a Thomas & Mary born in 1788 who is still around in 1851.)

No one else seems to be responding to this at the moment.  I can't see Samuel prior to Thomas's christening. I wonder whether it is worth you starting a new post to see if you can track back on Stephen Glover or James Mackay Glover to see if they give you a lead back to Wales. It would be better to have a separate post for each of them.  It may even be worthwhile starting a post on the London/Middlesex boards to see if anyone can get you back further on Samuel.  Maybe best one at a time though  :-\
