Why not check for parents marriage? See if record is clearer
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I'm not sure where to look for the marriage, to be honest. Just finding my way in Irish records.

Did they marry in that church?

Marriages start 1825 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0554

I honestly couldn't say. I am working backwards hoping to find something. If I was to get John Mullaney's English marriage cert would it give his father's name?

Yes an English marriage certificate would give his father's name.

Are you sure that this is the right parish in Ireland?

I may have to buy John Mullaney's marriage cert. I don't know where John's parents were married.

Right parish for what?

For John's birth.

On the 1881 census John gives his place of birth as Roscommon, Ireland. His wife gives hers as Mayo, Ireland. That is the information I am currently working from.
