Warwickshire Record Office - Look-up request
« on: Wednesday 04 January 17 17:24 GMT (UK) »
If anyone happens to be going to the Warwick Record Office in January I would be very grateful for a look-up of the following:

St. Peter's Church, Coventry. Marriage on 28th December 1903. Groom: John William Bottrill. Bride: Sarah Ann Jarram.[/b]

I have been searching high and low in all the usual places for details of John William's father and have found nothing at all. John William also had a mysterious sister called Mrs. Taylor who lived at Oakham, Rutland - she seems to be equally untraceable.

The name of John William's father and notes of witnesses might be crucial.

The record office catalogue entry is:

AccNoDR0723
DR0723A
DR1194
DR1297

Hi - and a warm welcome to Rootschat!

Have you found the couple on 1911 census? (sorry, look ups for that one aren't allowed). If so, where and when was John W born?
What is the source of the fact that he had a sister called Mrs Taylor? Any idea of her Christian name?

Asking on the offchance whether you know John's mother's name? When you have made 2 more posts [just reply briefly twice to this thread] you can send & receive personal messages - 'pm's.

Dear Josey and Liz,

What a lovely welcome to the List. Thank you.

John William Bottrill appears only on the 1911 census, living with his wife, children and widowed mother in St. Agnes Lane, Coventry. His mother Ellen Bottrill (b. 1860) gives her place of birth as Oakham, Rutland, and also John William's place of birth (b. 1885) is given as Oakham, Rutland.

The problem with the possible Broom/Baker connection in Oakham is that I have so far been unable to link the names Broom or Baker with any marriage with a Bottrill. As yet I cannot explain this change of surname.

The snippet about John William's sister Mrs. Taylor appears in a 1920's book about Rutland soldiers killed in WW1. I have no idea of Mrs. Taylor's first name(s).

interestingly on the GRO site the birth of John William Baker mentioned above doesn't have a mothers maiden name

Dear keyboard86

The Ellen and John W in this group of people look suspiciously like John William Bottrill and his mother but this time using the surname of Rodgers.

I'm beginning to wonder if Ellen was a serial surname changer (depending on who she was living with rather than actually marrying any of the men concerned)!
