This miotgh be of interest from the Brecon County Times May 1915

DBATH OF MRS A. BURTON. The death took place on Thursday at Shanklin, Isle of Wight, of Mrs Burton, the youngest daughter of the late Mr Shepherd, and of Mrs Shepherd, Priory Hill, Brecon. She was married to Mr Arthur Burton, a builder of Shanklin, and her husband and two children survive her. Her father will be remembered by the older inhabitants of the borough as a coachman in the employment of the Castell Madoc family for many years. He was one of the old school of servants now fast disappearing.

I'm intrigued as to where the money came from. I think Diana's father may have been a mason - there's some references in newspapers to a Mr Winstone, mason living close to the Shepherds (they all witnessed a horse and cart accident)

Gosh,
Just stopped for a reviving cup of tea, as I thought things had quietened down on here... but you've uncovered more precious information about the family, JJen and Mabel.  Stunning stuff, and I suppose when things cool down a bit (tomorrow?) I'd better have a look into the provenance of that 1851 Census page when the 17 year old David SHEPHERD is living in the household headed by his 72 year old grandmother Joan WILLIAMS.  There are probably some more extraordinary tales to be told there, too.
Lovely to think that David S was valued as one of the old school coachmen or servants...

To fill in a few gaps

Here's Elizabeth in 1881, just before her marriage. address is Belsize Park, which fits the details on the marriage to William Stagg

Edward Axmann    44
Pauline Axmann    46
Anne Thomas    45
Elisabeth Shepherd    23 - cook domestic servant b Breconshire
Mary A. Ivory    24

RG11, 173, 70, 31

similarly i think this is Emily, also in service in new Cavendish Square, London

Arthur Vokins    41
Mary A. Vokins    39
Minnie M. Vokins    14
Louisa Barrett    42
Emily Shepherd    22 - b Wales, housemaid

RG11, 140, 41, 75

Emily's marriage - address as 1881, but no obviously family witnesses

Emily Shepherd, 22. father David Shepherd, farm steward
Francis Arthur Atterton 22, butcher. Father James Atterton, florist
Marriage    21 Jan 1883, St Marylebone

Annie S Shepherd b c1859 Brecon, is a servant (nurse) in Kensington in 1891. Ref RG12, 18, 100, 6. I would reckon this is yours, although the age is out [possibly 22 on the image, its written over]

Mabel, and now keyboard86,
Have just woken up and done all the usual things one likes to do in the morning, and here I am in front of my computer screen again, and you've both unearthed even more vital details on this SHEPHERD family.  Thank you both so much again.  And I realise now that the WILLIAMS clan must be a hard one to follow further due to its extreme frequency of use in Wales...
However, Keyboard86, you've definitely saved me £9-25p on sending away for that marriage certificate at the GRO!
Any time anybody who has helped on this thread needs info from the Cambs County Record Office, which is only a couple of miles away from me, do please ask...
Keith

Perhaps I'm being slightly greedy now, but would anyone who has helped on here - and I imagine that there's a lot of local knowledge and expertise shared by you all - have any idea what and where the Inn might have been that Mark (briefly, with his death at the age of 40) and his wife/widow Elizabeth ran in this area of Brecon.  My geography of this lovely part of Wales is a bit sketchy, and I'm having trouble even pronouncing some of these placenames quietly to myself!
