The absence of the word "deceased" against a father, on a marriage entry does not indicate he was alive?! ;D

He might be alive, but just as easily, perhaps the question wasn't asked?

I looked at the marriage registers for Paul ( having family in that area) on familysearch.org.The actual registers can be seen, and quite a number have had dead put in the column for Rank or Profession of father.
Rather blunt,I thought.

The death in 1849 matches with the baptism of a James Tonkin in St Just on  25 March 1785, son of James and Jane. This  would explain the naming of the groom in 1809 as "James Tonkin (jnr). A witness to that wedding was a Simon Tonkin. A Simon Tonkin was baptised in St Just on 18 March 1787, son of James and Jane. All conjecture but worthy of consideration.

My grandmother was married in 1907 at which time, according to her marriage certificate, her father was deceased. In fact he died in 1918. He had deserted his young family in about 1892 when, presumably,  he became as good as dead to them.

Hi whdsn

Since Thomas gives his father's name as Marrack he appears to be illegitimate. Assuming this is so, a possibility is Thomas Edwards base son of Alice Hugh of Penzance baptized 29th May 1813 at St Mary Chapelry of Penzance.  On the marriage record Thomas makes his mark so maybe he is a little unsure of his age and baptized name. On the baptism record Alice is described as a Water Carrier.

Alice appears to have married John Rowe on 18th Oct 1818 at Madron.  A Thomas Hugh made his mark as a witness. Possible brother of Alice?
