Thomas COOKIN died Runcorn January 1844 - Any other Cookin Runcorn area?
« on: Sunday 08 January 17 01:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi

The Bolton Chronicle, 13 January 1844.
Runcorn.- Awful Death.- T. Cookin was employed by his brother Joseph, and others, by the Old Quay Company, to discharge the cargo of the schooner Popplewell, John Croft, master, from Dublin. Thomas Cookin was lying on his back, and appeared to be drunk and insensible, while his brother Joseph was singing and carousing. [The newspaper had taken the info from the Chester Courant]

I was wondering if there was a COOKIN family in the Runcorn area, please?

Thanks Mark

If you look on free bmd for any records for Cookin in the Runcorn area from 1838 to 1974, that death is the only one that shows....

(But I did not check for spelling variations.)

Thank you very much for the replies.

A James Cookin appears as a Witness on the July 1815 Selby Marriage Register entry of my 4 X Gt. Grandfather George Hood and you may have noticed posts on Rootschat, that I am stuck with confirming a previous Hood generation.

July 1815 COOKIN Witness signature here ...

Noticed only two COOKINS 1837 to 1900 on Free BMD, which are confirmed by the scans.

For images see my - Reply # 10.

On the new GRO online Index, the 1838 John Cookin, District Runcorn, entry, has disappeared, so reported it to GRO to be checked.

If Ann Cookins died age 60 in Runcorn in 1843, have you found her on the 1841 census?

Thanks Chempat

I'll check out these Census - Cookin variants at our Library, I've downloaded no end of Yorkshire Hoods and a few others.

If you've found a William Hood (bapt 1816 & 1st son of my mysterious George Hood of Selby aged 60 at death in Sept 1845), with a Cockin or Cookin in 1841, please let me know, as William Hood is missing in the 1841 Selby Census.

Thanks, Mark
