Trying to trace the Deans of Littledown
« on: Sunday 08 January 17 15:52 GMT (UK) »
On 27 July 1830 John Derham and Mary Dean were married by licence at Holdenhurst wit William Waterman (John's cousin) and James Dean.

On 28 May 1832 Joseph Cooper and Elizabeth Dean were married by licence also at Holdenhurst wit  Jane Dean, Edward Cooper and Richard Dean.

In 1851 a Joseph and Elizabeth Cooper have living with them their niece Mary Louisa Derham age 7. I have found birth reg of their son James Edward Cooper b 1840 who is also with the family on the census and mother maiden name is Dean, so it looks as if Mary and Elizabeth Dean are sisters, possibly daughters of Robert but can anyone find where Richard Dean fits in?

1841 has 2 entries who were old enough to have witnessed an 1832 marriage - One born 1766 and the other 1786

No suitable candidates in 1851

Have you checked the 1841 entries?

No birthyears given for Elizabeth or Mary

That Elizabeth was born 1800 Holdenhurst - not Littledown

According to censuses Elizabeth was born abt 1810, but Mary only appears on 1841 and her age is given as 40. Mary died in 1849, husband John died earlier. A relative took out a grant of administration in 1859. There is a death of a Mary Derham reg in Alverstoke in 1849 age 51 which could be her so year of birth about 1798

According to censuses Elizabeth was born abt 1810

The 1851 entry you quote above shows Joseph as 57 (1794) and Elizabeth as 51 (1800)

In 1861 she is a widow aged 61 born Holdenhurst - so birthyear consistent as 1800

Just found will of Richard Dean of Holdenhust gentleman who died in 1837, he mentions both Mary and  Elizabeth and their husband's names. And there is another sister Jane, residue goes to son John Dean. His wife also called Mary is joint executor so still alive at his death.

Obviously some money in the Dean family, so even more likely a connection to the Littledown Cooper-Deans as family stories say.

Oops - can't do the maths - was subtracting age from 10 more than the census year in each case. ???

I've come back to this little puzzle.
So far we have Richard Dean who died after 19 Nov 1836 and before 1 July 1837, who had a wife Mary, daughters Mary (b abt 1798, married John Derham), Elizabeth (b abt 1800, married Joseph Cooper) and Jane (b unknown date, no husband mentioned in her father's will) and son John.
I've found a death for a Mary Dean in Christchurch district in 1842 age 78 (b abt 1764) and another in 1844 age 70 (b abt 1774).
I have found the older Mary Dean in 1841, she is Independent, address New House off D?.... (can't read place) in Holdenhurst with one servant.
Piece: 398 Book:29 Folio: 24  Page Number: 14
Two possibilities for younger Mary

Piece: 397 Book: 3 Folio: 13 Page Number: 18  (this one is with a Tom Dean of same age so unlikely to be her.

Piece: 397 Book: 3 Folio 10 Page Number: 11 (possible, no occupation, record said widow, but has been crossed through, two younger females with different surnames in household ages 15 and 20 no occupations for them).

My feeling is that the older Mary is the one, which would widen up the birth year for the missing John and Jane and date of her marriage to Richard.
Can anyone find any possibilities for John and Jane in censuses please?

Have you Googled Cooper Dean family? They were a well known, being one of the founding families of Bournemouth, the Cooper Dean Roundabout on  the A338 into Bournemouth is named after them.  The Dorset History Centre should hold a lot of information about the family.
