parish records for Appleton?
« on: Sunday 08 January 17 16:22 GMT (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters

I'd like to find out who were the parents of Hugo Weaving, born 1887 or 1888 in Appleton.  Seems that the parish records published by Oxfordshire Family History Society only go up to 1839.

Is there anyone who might be able look this up please or is it only going to be possible via a visit to the records office?

with thanks

You could get his birth certificate - unless you mean 1787 not 1887?

There is one in Mar 1887 Abingdon 2c 283

Per GRO search mothers maiden name Franklin.

Have you found him on any census?

There's a family tree with his parents as John Walker Weaving and Annie Margaret Franklin if that helps  :)

Goodness me Milliepede, thank you for your response.

Even with just one extra detail (mother's maiden name) you have added another sibling to a family that I thought I knew really well!  He died at just a few weeks old which is why I've not come across him before.

Thank you!

Hi KN :)

When the Oxfordshire/Berkshire border was re-drawn in 1974, parishes like Appleton and North Hinksey became part of Oxon.  However their parish records were deposited at the Berkshire Record Office in Reading and that's where they remain to this day.

As far as I know there are no plans to put the 'old Berks' records online.  I can only suggest you contact Reading or the Berkshire Family History Society and see if someone will do a look-up for you.  LDS do have a very old microfilm for Appleton but the quality is poor.

You have my sympathy.  Guess where about 40% of my ancestors came from ::) :(

I must correct myself.  To my surprise and delight, North Hinksey and South Hinksey are included in the Oxfordshire PRs on Ancestry - despite being 'old Berks'.

Don't really care why - it's good news ;D
