;D ;D ;D

As to the fold3 records, I do have a worldwide subs but couldn't access the fold3 ones.

I don't understand what "fold3" is. All the military records (including service records, medals, pension details) that I have come straight from ancestry.co.uk, via normal searching.

Can someone explain?

I think this goes to Fold3 - other marine records I tried certainly have

It's a link to the National Archive site.  :)

I have just added this to my other post
It now appears to go back to TNA web site.  I know that at one point recently I was trying to look at this record and it was telling me I needed a sub to Fold 3.  I have just checked the other Royal Marine record that I was trying to look at and that is also now going back to TNA.

I think I had one of the fold3 referrals from Ancestry a few weeks ago but found that the info was available on FindMyPast.

This goes to fold3 which then asks for membership. My Ancestry worldwide subs login details do not access the site.

Ah - it's one of Ancestry's new "external" indexes, so not a "restricted ancestry data set".

(they also do indexes to free external sites e.g. findagrave). The restriction/charge in this case is by fold3, not Ancestry.

Thank you.

I think fold 3 is an American site which specialises in military records. Ancestry purchased it and by having a basic index on their main site and a web link to it, it seems to me that they are basically trying to entice you into forking out another sub.

I also found that when I got those fold3 referrals they were the same as those on FindMyPast.  In the case of those two I already had a copy of them that I had got from Kew a few years ago on a huge sheet of paper copied straight from the book.  ;D

The same with me fortunately; I agree with William that it is another route for ancestry to obtain additional subs. The records used to be available & are now  not - we DIDN'T get an email shot about that, as I remember  >:(
