Cardiff burial look up
« on: Monday 09 January 17 20:34 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping someone can help me locate the burial for  a Joseph Imison Cleasby who  died after falling from the vessel he was a master of, Edgworth,  into   Penarth Dock, Cardiff on 29th January 1873.  This just happended to be his 45th birthday. Joseph was the only surviving child of my great x 3 grandfather Joseph Imison's sister Eliza. She died, I believe in childbirth in Manchester and Joseph Imison Cleasby was brought up from the age of 2 years by my great x 3 grandfather in Sunderland where he took his master's examination. I had always assumed that he was buried near where he died but just recently I found a reference to him which suggested he was buried at Mere Knolls Cemetery in Sunderland. However, a search has revealed that he is not actually buried there he is simply commemorated on the headstone along with others in the family lost at sea.
I am not familiar with Cardiff so do not know the various cemeteries but I think there must be records held in the local library. I am hoping that someone could kindly look for me or give me some advice on how I can get this information.

There is no easy way to look up Cardiff council - not churchyard - burials before 1910 (after that the records have been computerised and are available on request from the bereavement services dept of the council).

There are burial books available at the Glamorgan archives but these are arranged by parish area and could take quite an extended search unless you know more details.

Hi Deirdre,

Thanks for the reply. Looks like this isn't going to be easy.

it was the dock at Penarth where he was found and he was buried in the parish church St Augustine 11 March 1873, mistranscribed as Cleasly.

That is brilliant! How do you know he is buried in St. Augustine? He was the master of the Edgworth. A steward also drowned. I have the died at sea record.

Thank you so much. I am very pleased.

That's great. I did look on FindMyPast for Glamorgan burials but it didn't find that one.
