looking for a Private John Powers 8th Irish Liverpool
« on: Tuesday 10 January 17 08:11 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage certificate of John Powers and Alice Cardwell in Blackpool 1915. John gave these details, Private  8th Irish Liverpool Regiment Blacksmith. Bachelor age 30, so born about 1885. His father John was also a blacksmith.

He died 08 December 1947 age 62 and is buried in Fleetwood Lancashire and the cemetery record shows him as Laurence John Powers (Paddy)

Can anyone help find his service records

regards

dinkey

The medal roll records show 3 Powers in the 8th (Irish) Bn Kings Liverpool Regiment, Edward Joseph, Frederick Charles and James Jos, no detailed personal info.  No J or LJ (or variants or Power without s) turn up in the detailed service records. Not helpful I'm afraid except in a negative sense.

Since approximately seventy percent of WW1 records were lost in WW2, it is highly likely his records were amongst those lost.

8/KLR went overseas in May 1915. Your man married in Dec. 1915 so didn't go with them. He may not have gone overseas at all so there may not be a medal card.

There is a medal card for a Private Lawrence Power #268951. It just says Liverpool Regiment but his number is in a block starting 265001 allocated to the Liverpool Irish. These six digit numbers were given in the order men joined the Irish. So he was a late joiner. Although they gave a new number to soldiers still missing in action - ie not known as a low or no identity tags recovered.

If you have an address for him you could try the 1918/19 electoral roll.

The Kings Regt Devereux Data Base has 6 Powers none of those Christian Names,
However there is a Lawrence Power Pte 268951  and also Eight names John Power - on the database.
The Museum of Liverpool Life at the Pier Head Waterfront is closed for Building Maintenance till late February 2017
Entering the name on the touch screen database at the foot of the Regt Medal Tower Column will show loads more on each recruit under each name.
Will Have a look in March when I am next back in Liverpool

268951 Lawrence Power was 1/7th Kings Liverpool (medal roll), no other battalions or number mentioned,  but the number allocation referred to by Ken is perplexing?

This man certainly seems to be difficult to trace by way of records.

At the time of marriage his address was 79 Central Drive Blackpool which was a boarding house. This suggests he was not there long, perhaps just long enough for his wedding as the church was also on Central Drive.
